Nip that "bug" in the bud
herbal solutions for colds and flu
Dated: October 2006
Publication: Taste for Life

You wake up with a sore throat, a runny nose, and achy joints. Your
brain feels like it’s swimming in cotton, and your stomach is off
kilter. You are experiencing the first signs of a cold or flu. Unless
you take care of these early symptoms promptly, by the end of the
day, you will be another statistic.

Each year Americans suffer approximately a billion colds and
spend several billion dollars in over-the-counter (OTC) cough and
cold medications. Between 10,000 and 20,000 individuals—almost
all of them elderly, newborns, or chronically ill—die annually from
flu complications, usually pneumonia. And it’s estimated that 15
million workdays a year are lost in the U.S. due to colds or flu.

Cranberries and Urinary Tract Infections
Dated: October 2006
Publication: Natural Products Marketplace

It’s not just an old wives’ tale – cranberries are powerful medicine against urinary tract infections (UTIs).

Cranberries prevent and treat UTIs in several ways, including increasing acidity of urine and preventing adhesion of E. coli to uroepithelial cells in the bladder. Research reviews have concluded there is evidence that cranberry juice may decrease the number of UTIs in women.

“ Cranberries and blueberries contain antioxidant conpounds and a sugar (Mannose) that help to prevent the formation of new bacterial colonies in the urinary tract,” noted Neil Levin, CCN, nutrition educator with NOW foods.

Clinical trials have shown cranberry juice can reduce the risk of UTIs and the bacterial adherence of E. coli strains, and cranberry tablets (as Cran-Max®, from Proprietary Nutritionals) may be an equally effective treatment as juice at just half the cost.

Daniel Gagnon, medicinal herbalist and owner of Herbs, Etc., Inc., developed CranBladder ReLeaf® to support urinary tract health. He noted, “Healthy bladder walls are conducive to healthy bladder tissues by supporting the secretion of bacterial anti-adherence factors. This formula stimulates the urinary immune system, slightly acidifies the urine and tones the urinary passages”.

Poison Ivy Press Release

Dated: June 2006
Global Warming Brings Itchier Poison Ivy

Global warming may one day be the cause of more than melting icecaps and homeless polar bears. Increased levels of CO2 in the atmosphere could also lead to increased growth of poison ivy in a more lethal form, according to a recently released study from Duke University. The six-year study, conducted in a forest near Chapel Hill, North Carolina, created CO2 levels that were some 20 parts per million more than the current norm, levels that are predicted to become a global reality by the year 2050. The poison ivy growth in the areas where the study was done surged some 150%. Studies in tropical forests already report an increase in woody vines of which poison ivy is included.

Poison ivy affects 350,000 Americans alone each year, according to an article written by Brian Handerk for National Geographic News, who reported on the Duke study. Approximately 80% of all people are allergic to poison ivy and experience a red, bumpy, itchy and sometimes blistering skin rash when they come into contact with urushiol, the plant’s carbon-based active compound. The Duke study showed that the fast-growing carbon-dioxide enhanced poison ivy vines contain a stronger strain of urushiol, which could prove to be even more poisonous to humans.

Herbs Etc.’s Ivy Itch ReLeaf® spray stimulates healing for outbreaks of poison ivy or poison oak and soothes irritated skin caused by insect bites or stinging nettles. Packaged in a handy 1-oz. size, Ivy Itch ReLeaf® can easily be tossed in a backpack or summer first aid kit for use when hiking, camping, and other outdoor activities
